Doris B. Armstrong, 90, of Downsville, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, March 14, 2022 at Robinson Terrace in Stamford, following a long illness.

Doris was born Sept. 2, 1931 in Shinhopple, the daughter of the late Clyde and Delilah (Wormuth) Babcock. On Dec. 30, 1952, she married Sherman Armstrong. He died Dec. 6, 2008.

Doris was employed for many years at Downsville Central School as a cook. She was a great cook and specialized in many things but was famous for her macaroni salad. Before working at the school, she worked at the Roundup Ranch.

Doris was a former member of the Downsville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and a regular member of the coffee club at the Downsville Diner. Doris enjoyed going for rides in her car, looking at the beautiful scenery or just sightseeing. She also would go to the town landfill to find “precious treasure” as she called it. She loved to play cards with her friends, and going out to eat with them, feeding the birds on her porch, and planting flowers in the special place Sherm made for her. Doris will be remembered as a kind soul who liked to collect stuff.

Doris is survived by her family whom she loved very much, especially her grandchildren Kristina Armstrong, James (Jaclyn) Armstrong, and great-grandson, Archer; daughter-in-law Dawn Armstrong; her nephew Vaughn Vernold and wife Nancy.

She was predeceased by her only son, James Armstrong on Jan. 4, 2022, and her sister, Thelma Vernold on Jan. 21, 2020.

Services will be held in the spring at a date and time to be announced.

Donations in Doris’s memory may be made to the Downsville Fire Department, 15166 State Highway 30, Downsville, NY 13755.

Arrangements are under the direction of Courtney Funeral Home, Walton. Condolences to the family may be made online at www.courtneyfh.com.
