DelCo reports low Primary early voting numbers

DELHI -  Early voting numbers for the Governor and Lieutenant Governor Primaries in Delaware County were comparatively low on Friday afternoon, June 24.

Competiting in the  Democratic primary election on  are incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul who is being challenged by Tom Suozzi and Jumaane Williams. 

Democrats competing for lieutenant governor include incumbent Antonio Delgado, Diana Reyna and Ana Maria Archila.

Republicans competing for the governor post  include: Lee Zeldin, Andrew Giuliani, Rob Astorino and Harry Wilson.

Just over 143 registered voters cast their ballots by 2:15 p.m. Voters can cast their ballot until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 24.

Early voting continues on Saturday and Sunday, June 25 and 26 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Delaware County Board of Elections, 3 Gallant Ave, Delhi.

Deputy Democratic Election Commissioner Paula Schermerhorn said she considers turnout for early voting for this year’s Primary to be “good.” 

“It was more than we expected,” Schermerhorn said. Early voting in Delaware County began in 2020 and that year, 58 Delaware County Democratic residents voted in the Presidential Primary, and 24 Delaware County residents voted in the Republican Congressional Primary. 

The 2020 General Election netted 3,371 early voters, which Democratic Election Commissioner Judith Garrison attributes to the COVID-19 pandemic and the presidential election.

In 2021, 437 Delaware County voters cast their vote early in the General Election - a non-presidential election year, which was also a local election year.

Registered voters can vote at local polling places on Tuesday, June 28, Primary Election Day.
