David M. Cantwell, 72, of Treadwell, formerly of Walton, passed away on Monday morning, June 29, 2020 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.
Born on Aug. 29, 1947 in Margaretville, David was the son of the late Ralph Martin and Julia Mary (Tirpak) Cantwell.
David was valedictorian of the class of 1965 at Margaretville Central School. He went on to graduate summa cum laude from St. Bonaventure University. Following his college graduation David proudly served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1970-72 and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. He returned home and worked for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection Board of Water Supply, retiring 30 years later as a Supervisor of Watershed Maintainers.
David enjoyed spending time with his best friend and companion Martha Houck. The couple enjoyed traveling, especially to Nova Scotia, and spending time with their standard poodles, Grimm, Doc and Hank. Martha and David enjoyed spending time with friends, often out on dinner dates. David continued to support his alma mater St. Bonaventure, always cheering on the Bonnies during basketball seasons. David enjoyed attending his stepdaughters’ and grandchildren’s athletic events, concerts and award ceremonies over the years.
Besides his parents and Martha, David was predeceased by a sister, Mary Ellen Cantwell.
David is survived by his stepdaughters: Jamie Mabery (Walter Meier) and Crystal (Jamie) Houck, both of Downsville; grandchildren Colin and Owen Ambrose, J. Chase Mabery, Kayla and Travis Houck; cousins Sharon (Ed) Craft, Janice Kelly Skievaski, Larry (Linda) Kelly and Gary (Tony) Smith.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 134 Main Street, Delhi. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, at Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell. Due to COVID-19 social distancing and face masks will be required.
