Carl Wood

Carl Wood, 58, of Walton, passed away with his wife Deborah by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Carl enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, like classic rock, bowling with friends, watching NASCAR, cabin camping in Downsville, traveling (including to far-flung places like Cancun, Jamaica and The Dominican Republic) and, above all else, spending time with his family. He loved being outdoors, whether barbecuing or just enjoying a quiet moment. His “happy place” was sitting on the deck overlooking his yard, with a cold drink in his hand and his family by his side. Carl met his wife Deb in 1985 and together, they never looked back. They married in 1986, and welcomed a daughter, Sarah, in 1987. Carl worked for Del-Ton Sanitation for many years as a garbage truck driver, until his health forced him to hang up his hat. Despite his health problems, Carl was very much a laid back, no nonsense, lighthearted man. He was known for cracking jokes and sharing entertaining stories, even when the resulting laughter was at his own expense.

In 2012, Carl became the world’s proudest grandfather to a grandson, Riley. Riley, affectionately nicknamed “Bubba,” was the light of Carl’s life. For years, they did everything together. Carl was a family man through and through, and cherished every second that he spent with his wife, daughter, and grandson. Early in 2020, Carl and Deb achieved a major life goal and became first-time homeowners. Over the last two years, their home became their sanctuary and the backdrop for countless cookouts and relaxing evenings on the deck. Carl will be missed beyond measure.

He was predeceased by his father, Floyd Wood.

Carl is survived by his wife of 35 years, Deb; daughter Sarah and grandson, Riley; his mother Ramona Wood; brothers Jeff (Wendy) Wood and Richard Wood; special friends Steve Armstrong and Eric Boice, and feline companions Kinger and Trixie.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Carl’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Family and friends are invited to call today, Wednesday, April 20, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at Riverside Alliance Church, 110 Stockton Avenue, Walton, where services will be at noon to gather and celebrate Carl’s life.

Arrangement are under the direction of Courtney Funeral Home, Walton. Condolences to the family may be made online at www.courtneyfh.com.
