Bushel presents Community Film Pick: Summer of Soul

Posted

As part of its Community Film Picks series, Bushel will host a screening of Summer of Soul, directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. The film will be shown on Friday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. followed by a DJ set from 9–10:30 with Darwin Marcus Johnson. This program is free to attend. Masks are optional but encouraged; remain home if you are feeling ill.

Summer of Soul was the filmmaking debut of Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. This documentary is part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just 100 miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was forgotten, until now. The feature includes concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension, and more.

Community Film Picks is a once-a-month film night at Bushel taking place on third Fridays at 7 p.m. Bushel invites the community to propose films for future screenings. For information email info@bushelcollective.org.
