DELHI – Another new case of COVID-19 was reported in Delaware County on Friday as half the state began a phased reopening of businesses. There have been 64 confirmed local cases of the virus in the county, and three people are still hospitalized. Four people have died, and another 12 are in mandatory quarantine. The results of 20 tests are still pending.
In his daily press conference, Governor Andrew Cuomo said that New York would open its beaches on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, but there will be strict limits on how many people can be on the beach, and masks are required if social distancing is not possible. The neighboring states of New Jersey, Connecticut and Delaware will also be open that weekend.
He extended the NYPAUSE shutdown to May 28 for areas of the state that do not yet meet criteria to begin opening, but made it clear that as soon as they are eligible, they can begin to reopen.
The governor also said New Yorkers should expect to see the state's rate of infection increase as the state reopens. The keys questions, he said, are people's compliance with public health guidelines, and making sure the state reacts quickly to any increase that begins to approach the outbreak level of a pandemic.
“How this goes is up to us,” Cuomo said. “It is up to each of us at the same time.”
