Almeda “Al” Wilmarth of Deposit passed away on March 18, 2021 at her winter home in West Palm Beach, Fla. She was born on May 6, 1933 in Athens, Pa., to Rex and Dorothy Gorsline.
After graduating from Athens High School in 1951, she went to work as a stenographer for the FBI in New York City and then worked as a secretary for Bendix Aviation in Elmira Heights. She graduated from Bloomsburg University in 1960 and began her teaching career at Binghamton High School.
At a dance studio in Binghamton, she met and fell in love with Edwin Wilmarth, and in 1962 they were married. They moved to Oswego, where she taught at Mexico high school and earned an MS degree at SUNY Oswego, while Ed earned his BS degree. In 1965, they moved to Delhi, where Ed was a professor at SUNY Delhi. When the children were in elementary school, Al continued her teaching career as a professor at SUNY Delhi.
She spent many happy years with family and friends in Delhi. She was active in the Delhi Homemakers’ Club and as a 4-H leader. After retirement, Al and Ed remodeled and moved into their summer home at Oquaga Lake in Deposit. Al loved to travel, and she and Ed enjoyed many elder hostel ski trips all over the world. They went on many adventures, cruises, and annual ski trips to Park City, Utah. She also enjoyed refinishing furniture, and ballroom dancing at Scott’s Oquaga Lake House and the Let’s Dance club in Binghamton. She enjoyed card games and mahjong with friends. She was an excellent seamstress and was always happy to oblige family and friends with alterations, hems, zipper or button replacements. We will all miss her incredible pies, rolls, and cinnamon buns at holidays.
Al is survived by her best friend and lifelong dance partner - her husband of 58 years, Ed; her son Kurt Wilmarth of Rochester, and her daughter Amy Wilmarth Tuller and grandson Luca Cardenali of Strafford, Vermont. She is also survived by her sisters Louise Polzella of Athens, Pa. and Dolores Wheaton of Rome, Pa., as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Rex and Gerald, and cousin, Geraldine Daley.
A celebration of Almeda’s life will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, feel free to make a donation to a charity of your choice in her name.
