Alfred “Papa” “Butch” Arnold, 73, of Oxford, formerly of Walton, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2022 after a brief illness.

Butch was born Dec. 23, 1948 in Walton, a son of Alfred L. Arnold and Belva Mae Thomas. He worked at S.J. Baily & Sons in Walton for many years as a woodworker.

A friend to many, he enjoyed carpentry and tinkering on cars with his friend, John Sosa. His great love was his granddaughter, Wendy, who he loved and supported from birth. He was always surrounded by children who all called him Papa. He could be found sitting on his porch, coffee in hand, chatting with friends and neighbors or transporting neighborhood children to the pool or skate rink. Lovingly referred to as “Grumpy,” he was always available to help or lend an ear to those he cared for.

Butch is survived by his granddaughter, Wendy Arnold of Oxford, and her partner Chad Nightingale; a son, Alfred J. Arnold and partner Keri Batson of Walton, adopted daughter Sherry Finch of Unadilla, good friend, Lori Sosa of Walton, and adopted grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, brother Irve and sister Vicky.

Services will be private and at the discretion of family. Donations in Butch’s memory can be made to the National Kidney Foundation or any local animal shelter.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main Street, Oxford. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Friends and family may share memories and condolences at behefuneralhome.com.
