John O. Every, 92, of Bloomville, passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown following a short illness.

Born May 20, 1931, in Bloomville, John was the son of the late Allen and Blanche (Ives) Every. 

John was a Korean War Veteran. Inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame in 2019, he served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1948 until 1952. Sgt.  Every was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines as a mortar gunner. John fought at the Chosin Reservoir, known as the group of the “Chosin Few.” 

He was employed as a truck driver for several years by Dellwood Foods in Fraser. 

John served for 25 years as a Town of Kortright Councilman, was a 55-year member of the Bloomville Fire Department and served on the emergency squad. He was a member of VFW Post #6292 in Stamford. 

Mr. Every was a dedicated member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, serving as a warden for many years. John enjoyed hunting, taking many trips with his son and grandsons. 

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings Margaret, Helen, Nellie and Allen Jr.  

John is survived by his wife Lorene (Johnsmeyer) Every of Bloomville; children Patricia (Grant Pratt) Every of Binghamton, John A. (Wendy) Every of Wisconsin, and Theresa Every Alexander of North Carolina; stepchildren Darlene (Steve) Scherer of Bloomville, Clayton (Pam) Finch of East Meredith and Frederick Finch of Davenport; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, River Street, Bloomville, with The Rev. Laura Miller, celebrant. A reception and celebration of John’s life will immediately follow at Every Community Hall (at the church). Spring burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.
