Hard work pays off at NYS Fair for DelCo 4-Hers

Those planning a trip up to the New York State Fair in Syracuse should add the 4-H Youth Building to your list of places to visit.

Approximately 40 exhibits were selected at the Delaware County Fair to represent Delaware County youth craftmanship at the state fair. Blue ribbons were rolling in for the high-quality projects displayed in the South-Central district booth near the event stage.

Exhibits selected include a variety of items ranging from table setting displays, sewing and quilting projects, photography, flower arrangements, chainmail jewelry, felting, a polar bear pumpkin, maple syrup, baked goods, woodworking projects, and more.

In addition to the projects selected, multiple Delaware County Youth have been participating in animal knowledge competition events or shows at the fair, which runs through Sept. 4. Congratulations are in order for the Delaware County Dairy Challenge team which took first place in the Beginner Division on Aug. 23. In addition to placing first as a team, they all placed in the top 10 as individual competitors. Coach Heather Merrill said their hard work is paying off and they are incredibly proud of themselves. The team consists of Jasper Dibble - second place, Brayden Barnhart - fifth place, Addy Olsen - sixth place, and Gabi Barnhart - tenth place. They have been practicing for the event all summer to prepare for the county and state competitions under the guidance of 4-H volunteer coaches Vanessa Wickham, Heather Merrill and Deb Merrill.

At the New York State Fair horse show ring, Charleigh Brown and Tierney Dykstra have been busy competing. Brown placed second in pole bending, first in quadrangle barrels, third in Texas T, fourth in bleeding heart, and fifth in the figure 8.

Brown and Dykstra competed in Hippology Aug. 28 and mini and hunt seat classes in the show ring.

Other Delaware County 4-H youth made the trip to Syracuse to give their public presentations (a public speaking component of 4-H) in the 4-H Youth Building. The 4-H Team at Cornell Cooperative Extension Delaware County thankds all 4-H volunteers, families, and partners for their endless support which make experiences such as these possible. Enrollment for the next 4-H year opens Oct. 1. Learn more by calling 607-865-6531 or visiting www.ccedelaware.org/4h-youth-development.
