SUNY Delhi Student Found Dead At O’Connor Residence Hall, Confirmed Suicide

Alec Zarkower Alec Zarkower DELHI - At a press conference at State University of New York at Delhi late Monday afternoon, President Michael Laliberte addressed the campus in Farrell Community Center regarding the death of a student. It was later confirmed that the cause of death was self-inflicted.

He said Alec Zarkower, a freshman at the college, was found dead following a report of a possible suicide at O’Connor residence hall just before 11 a.m. on Monday, March 11.

Zarkower is from Cortlandt Manor, attended Walter Panas High School and was studying automotive technology at SUNY Delhi. During the conference, campus police chief Martin Pettit declined to provide any further details or field questions regarding the incident. He said that the cause of death was yet to be determined and an autopsy was slated for Tuesday.

President Laliberte asked the student body to be “respectful” and consider Zarkower’s loved ones before taking to social media.

Students were notified of the death in the afternoon, and officials said it was quickly determined that there was no immediate threat of danger - classes resumed as scheduled throughout the day.

State Police Troop C Public Information Officer Aga Dembinska said they are assisting the SUNY Delhi University Police in the investigation.

Vice President for Marketing and Communications Dawn Sohns said students are encouraged to go to Health and Counseling Services in Foreman Hall if they would like to speak with a counselor.
