By Rosie Cunningham

A 23-year-old female was killed Thursday evening after being struck by a tractor trailer on State Highway 10 in the village of Stamford near the Baptist Church, according to Stamford Volunteer Fire Chief AJ Vamosy.

The victim was dead at the scene, he confirmed.

According to Troop C Public Information Officer, Trooper Aga Dembinska, the state police assisted Delaware County Sheriff deputies on the scene. The collision reconstruction team was on site.

The accident occurred at about 8 p.m. and closed a section of State Route 23 until about 2 a.m.

Chief Vamosy said the departments of Jefferson and Hobart assisted with traffic control - Delaware County dispatchers also assisted with the accident. He also thanked the New York State Department of Transportation and crew, all law enforcement who were present - the sheriff’s department, state police, the county Chaplain and debriefing team, Paul Decker of the local funeral home, Stewart’s Shops and Mama Maria for donating goods to all involved. “I just want to say again how proud I am of everyone in this department,” he stated. “Again, you all showed how professional we can be when this job gives us some of the worse situations to be in. You all stood together until the job was done. Our thoughts and prayers to the families involved.”
