Delaware Academy Boys Edge Walton In Rival Hoop Action

Franklin, Sidney Boys Nip Opponents In MAC

The Delaware Academy boys edged Walton 60-55 in a thriller on Wednesday.

Their performance from the charity stripe was instrumental in the come-from-behind win. In the fourth quarter, the squad went 13-for-15 from the line.

They came out of the gate tentative and Walton led by nine after the first quarter and seven going into the break. In the third quarter, Walton continued to lead, outscoring the Bulldogs 11-9. It was in the fourth quarter that DA spark came alive as the boys in maroon outscored the Warriors 25-11.

“The team did a great job of staying composed after being down 22-13 after the first quarter, 33-26 at the half and 44-35 after the third quarter,” said DA Coach Warren Kelly. “We never lost the belief that we could win the game if we stayed focused on what we had to do.

The whole team did a great job defensively, but AJ Aukstikalnis stood out in the 4th quarter for us.  He did a great job of trapping and rotating defensively to help us have our big 4th quarter.

Our pressure got us some big turnovers early in the 4th quarter so that we were able to erase the 9 point deficit with a lot of time left in the game.  Our foul shooting in the 4th allowed us to pull away and win.  We shot 13 for 15 from the foul line in the last quarter which was fantastic.”

For DA, Conor Aikens dropped 17 points, Alex Haight dropped  16 and Logan Aikens netted 10 points.

“I can’t overlook Luke Branigan’s seven points though,” said Kelly. “Luke scored all seven of his points in the third quarter where we only scored nine points total.  If he didn’t step up in the third, we would have been down much more than nine points going into the fourth quarter which would have changed the game significantly.”

Walton standout Dylan Jacob tallied 28 points in the loss.

DA boys hosts Sidney on Tonight at 5:30 p.m.
