Weather Words With Frank Ward

Weather Observer Frank Ward at his Third Brook Road homestead in Walton. Lillian Browne/The Reporter Weather Observer Frank Ward at his Third Brook Road homestead in Walton. Lillian Browne/The Reporter “Good morning! Well, what a week and what a month. We had some very strange month-end results. The last two weeks of January were very cold with seven days below zero and several days with single numbers. Our low was minus 12. At the beginning of the month we had six days above 40 degrees and one day above 50 degrees. When you average it all together, we had 20.6 degrees as our average temperature.

January started out with very dry weather and almost no snow, then everything broke loose and we ended with 28.2 inches of snow. The normal is 25 inches.

When it wasn’t snowing, it was raining, and we did have one minor flooding event with ice jams.

We ended the month with 5.19 inches of rainfall - normal is 2.81 inches. We were over by 2.38 inches.

Last year, 2018, we had our second wettest year. January had 3.62 inches of precipitation and we certainly beat that this year. The first three days of February we had two days with below zero temperatures - one of them was -15 degrees.

However, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday were all above normal.

The groundhog said we are going to have an early spring. I hope he’s right, but he usually isn’t.

We had record-breaking temperatures on Monday. It was 61 degrees, but it looks like the rest of this week is going to be rain, freezing rain and cold once again.” ~ Frank
