Walton Boys Narrowly Defeat 2017-18 Section IV Class D Champs

By Rosie Cunningham

Walton defeated Newfield 59-52 on Thursday in a hoop contest. Last year, Newfield finished the season as the state semifinalists and were the Section IV Class D champs.

Walton led at halftime, 29-20, and made it 48-30 after three quarters. Newfield scored 22 in the fourth quarter, but the Warriors held on for the victory.

For the Warriors, Dylan Jacob had a double-double with 22 points, 11 boards and he also tallied seven assists.

“It was our best game of the season against an excellent team,” said Walton head coach Dave Gardepe. “Newfield returned three starters from last years team. We moved the ball well, shot the ball well and had an all-around good game.”

Warrior Brett Charles also had a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and he also blocked four shots in the match.

“He’s been acting as a big man for us,” said Gardepe, whose team has few tall men.

For Newfield, LaRon Boykin had 13 points in the loss and teammates Jacob Humble and Josh Wood contributed 12 points apiece.

Walton’s Jose Mirabal scored 14 points for Walton. Teammate Tommy Maguire had nine.

“It was a team effort,” said Gardepe of the win.
