Anthony Morgano/The Reporter MARGARETVILLE - The Margaretville varsity girls basketball team hosted the South Kortright squad on Thursday, Jan. 3. The home team struggled early, as South Kortright played a full court press throughout the first quarter. Margaretville played hard and kept up with South Kortright’s tempo, but ultimately lost 61-22. Jordan Finch, Azalyn Brunson, and Carli Pardee all scored double digits for the Rams, and Netalia Herrera had 10 points for the Blue Devils.

South Kortright started the game strong, jumping to an early 18-2 lead after the first quarter, and ended the full court press up 19 with just over four minutes left in the second quarter. Both teams played well on defense, but South Kortright led in rebounds on both ends of the floor.

“Anytime you can get extra opportunities on the offensive end it’s a bonus,” explained Rams coach Josh Burroughs.

South Kortright’s large roster allowed the team to keep a high intensity level throughout the game.

“With our extra energy and our press working we were able to make it difficult for Margaretville to get into the half court,” Burroughs added. “But Margaretville played hard the whole game.”

Although the score looked one-sided, Margaretville was able to steal the ball 16 times.

“We played our game tonight,” said Margaretville coach Kim Balcom-Smith. “We get to meet them one more time this season and we want to play our game again.”
