Shots Fired in Franklin Lead to Illegal Deer Harvest, Donation of Venison

Kayla Dean, 30, Oneonta, was arrested by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Officers (ECO) on Dec. 16, after responding to a report of two shots fired back-to-back in Franklin. ECO Nathan Doig responded and discovered a vehicle parked in a field with a dead deer nearby.

The dead buck did not have legal-sized antlers and had been shot with a .243 caliber rifle, which is not legal for deer hunting during the muzzle loader season. Officers also report that Dean did not have did not possess a hunting license at the time of the incident. Tickets were issued and the deer was seized for donation, according to officers.
