Rosie Cunningham/The Reporter DELHI -The 13th annual Holiday for the Heart Celebration and Tree Raffle at the Delaware County Historical Association (DCHA) in Delhi took place Saturday and was a huge success.

The yearly event is a combined effort of the DCHA and the humane society, and features themed Christmas trees, live holiday music, a bake sale, holiday gift shopping, light fare and more.

Guests were invited to put their tickets in the bags in front of the decorated trees of their choice for an opportunity to win the tree.

DCHA Director Tim Duerden said it is a natural fit for the two locations to share the popular event as they are “neighbors.”

“The idea originally came from the humane society,” he said. “It’s a nifty combination.”

Ellen Giambalvo, representing the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society (HCHS) and cochair of the Woofs & Wags Bash, said clubs, individuals and businesses decorate the trees.

Duerden said individuals can come all week to view the trees and purchase tickets.

Giambalvo said last year about 400 people turned out for the Holiday for the Heart and Tree Raffle celebration.

“So far we have had about 200,” she said. “But we expect 400, if not more.”

If an individual wins a tree but does not want the actual tree, the winner may choose to take only the decorations. The businesses or individuals sponsoring the tree purchase the decorations themselves and each year, there is so much community support and so much creativity.

“This is a big fundraiser for us,” said Giambalvo. “The Woofs and Wags Walk and the dance as well.”
