Franklin Boys Defeat Milford in TVL

By Rosie Cunningham

Franklin defeated Milford 1-0 in the Tri-Valley League on Friday - it was the final game of the regular soccer season for the Purple Devils.

The game was scoreless throughout the first half. However, when offensive standout Collin Campbell took a direct kick from 45 yards out with 22:22 left in the game, the tie was broken.

“The game was well played by both teams. Both teams had opportunities to score but couldn’t quite find a way to put any shots away,” said Franklin Coach Allecia Laing. “After Collin Campbell scored on the direct kick, Milford tried to really press. We were able to keep them at bay and actually had a couple other opportunities to add to our tally.”

Laing said she was pleased that the team shut down Milford’s main offensive threat, Garrett Mertz, and held him to only two shots.

Franklin keeper Cole Ruff had seven saves in the net.

“The entire defense played very well, but my sophomore goalkeeper Cole Ruff, was incredible,” said Laing. “He made a couple of diving saves after we scored to keep the Wildcats scoreless. He also parried a couple over the crossbar. His punt also started some counter attack opportunities for us. My center back tandem of Brian Johns and Carson Dutcher were phenomenal as they didn’t allow Milford to break through. Again, it was a well played game, a fun one to watch and coach.”
