What a beautiful sunny fall day today (Friday) is - perfect for a walk on a hiking trail on Campbell Brook or Bear Spring Mountain. I love the smell of the woods in fall.

The smell of the woods, cinnamon and apples cooking and carving pumpkins will get you in the mood for the Downsville Halloween party on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the James S. Moore American Legion Post 167 River Road starting at 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

The American Legion would like to make everyone aware of an opportunity for veterans to enjoy the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown on Nov. 7 - free admission for all Veterans, sponsored by the NYS Division of Veteran Affairs.

A reminder: if you want to vote in this year’s election you must be registered. Oct. 12 is the last day to register by mail or in person at your local county board of elections office. Oct. 30 is the last day to mail your application for absentee ballots; you can pick up an application at the town hall or post office. Absentee ballots must be post marked by Nov. 5. The Delaware County Board of Election office is at 3 Gallant Avenue, Delhi, and is open from 8:30 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday - it’s next to the Delaware County Department of Public Works Building.

Margaretville Telephone Company is busy bringing broadband to almost all of Colchester. MTC has recently been working on Fuller Hill and River Road this week. The rural upgrades involve replacing NYSEG power poles to meet the required height, so be alert and drive with caution. They estimate that the pole replacement will be completed by November if the weather cooperates and the completed upgrade by early in 2019. If you have questions about your specific location availability and for services and pricing, contact MTC at 877-727-2288.

Another driving tip for your safety: the town of Colchester Highway Department will be working on Huntley Hollow doing stream remediation and removal of fallen trees in the coming weeks.

The Downsville Fire District 2019 budget meeting is scheduled for Oct. 16, 7 p.m. at the Downsville Fire Hall. Copies of the budget will be available that evening or may be viewed at the town clerks office during regular business hours.

Hope to see you all at the Colchester Community United Methodist Church rummage sale Oct. 18, 19 and bag day on Oct. 20. There are always lots of treasures and this is a wonderful way to support this church.

Downsville Central School Class of 2020 will have a bake and soup sale on Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18 in the parking lot of Fran’s Fuel Service at the red light in Downsville.
