Sidney Gridders Cruise Past Spartans

Benjamin Patton/The Reporter WELLS BRIDGE — The Sidney football Warriors made the short run to Unatego on Friday night, and came home with a lopsided 46-22 victory. David Gannon opened the scoring for the visitors with a four-yard touchdown run. Michael Mazzarella kicked the conversion and the first quarter finished at 7-0.

The Spartans came back in the second stanza, when Noah Hatalla connected up with Caden Clow for a 30-yard score, and Leo Temple ran for the extra points and put the hosts ahead, 8-7. Sidney went ahead again when Ryan Harris hooked up with Peyton Mosher for a 16- yard pass for a touchdown, but the conversion kick failed and the score was 13-8.

The Spartans answered right back, as Hatalla found paydirt from seven yards out, and the hosts were up, 14-13. Again the Warriors went ahead when Liam Matthews scored from 58 yards on a pass from Harris and Mazzarella kicked the PAT. Sidney then took charge when Matthews went 36 yards on a punt return. The visitors had a 26-14 lead at the half, as the kick failed.

Benjamin Patton/The Reporter In the third quarter, Gannon caught a Harris pass for 13 yards, and it was the only score of the period and the score was 32-14.

In the final frame, Harris hooked up with Colby Finch for an 84-yard touchdown and Mazzarell’s kick was good and the lead grew to 40-14. The visitors finished their scoring with a one-yard TD run by Cameron Chabot. Unatego got its final score with a Shea Barber one yard run and a two-point run by Tory Gue.

Benjamin Patton/The Reporter Harris completed 14 of the 16 passes he attempted, for 302 yards and four touchdowns. Gannon led the Sidney rushing with 77 yards on seven carries. For the Spartans, Temple ran 84 yards on 15 carries and Clow gained 68 yards on 14 totes.
