Softball Openers Go Mostly to Higher Seeds

Most of the area higher-seeded softball teams in the C and D classes were victorious in the first round of sectional play on Friday. In Class C, seventh seeded Sidney downed 10thseeded Greene, 15-6; eighth seeded Harpursville defeated ninth-seeded Seton Catholic, 7-2; and fourth-seeded Bainbridge Guilford had a bye.

In Class D, top-seeded Deposit overwhelmed 16th Worcester, 23-0 in a game that was terminated by the “mercy” rule after the top of the fifth inning; seventh seeded Hancock blanked 10th-seeded Milford, 15-0; and eighth-seeded Afton downed ninth-seeded Downsville/Roscoe/ Livingston Manor, 23-8. There was an upset in the “D” parings, as 12th-seeded Charlotte Valley/Stamford defeated fifth-seeded Roxbury, 13-9.

Today (Tuesday) in quarterfinal action in Class D finds Afton at Deposit, Hancock at second seeded Laurens. In Class C, B-G will be at home to fifth-seeded Moravia, Sidney will travel to face second-seeded Union Springs, and Harpursville will be at top-seeded Thomas A. Edison.
