SCS Track Coach ‘Optimistic’ About Spring Season

By Rosie Cunningham

STAMFORD - This season, the outlook for the Stamford Central School varsity track team is bright.

“I am very optimistic about our season,” said SCS Coach Greg O’Connell, who has been leading the Indians for 35 years. “Our numbers are better and the kids are truly working very hard. It’s very difficult doing everything indoors, but they’re adjusting.”

Key returning athletes are seniors: Kevin Prior, Elizabeth Vlahakis and Destiny Bertram. Juniors: Skylar Shafer and Dan Olson. Sophomores: Nicole Bryant and Helen Zheng and freshman, Melanie Hoyt.

Top newcomers for the girls are Katrina Alexander, Leanna McAuliffe, Krystal Villanueva, Mary Andrews and Ashley Clareen. Boys: Colin Sparling, Eric Fredenburgh, Sam Krum, Gabe Eggleston and James Olson.

“The teams to beat this season will be the merged teams in my opinion - Milford/Laurens and GMU/Morris should both be tough to beat,” said O’Connell. “Cherry Valley Springfield boys are always competitive as well.”
