SET TO PASS — Franklin’s Alissa Nowhitney look for a teammate to receive a pass, as teammate Kayla Campbell and two Morris players look on during Saturday’s Tri-Valley championship game at the Dewar Arena at SUNY Oneonta.
T.W. Coddington/The Reporter ONEONTA — The Franklin girls’ basketball team dominated the first half of Saturday’s Tri-Valley League championship game. The Purple Devils had an 18-7 lead at the quarter break, and at halftime, they led Morris by a 31-16 margin.
The Mustangs dominated the second half with an all-out pressure on both ends. They cut the lead to 33-31 going into the final frame, and finished with a 43-38 victory.
Franklin’s Kayla Campbell scored 22 points in the first half, but was held to one free throw after intermission. Conversely, in the second, it was another number 22 that took over. Morris’ Elizabeth Thompson scored 14 of her 22 points after the intermission.
AT THE LINE — Franklin’s Julie Archibald sets to deliver a free throw during the Tri-Valley League championship on Saturday, as Morris’ Reanen Goodspeed looks on.
T.W. Coddington/The Reporter “They (the Mustangs) came out with a box-and-one defense in the second half. They pressed to slow us down,” remarked Franklin Head Coach Mike Dutcher. “We made a lot of wrong decisions, and we also went nine-for 24 at the foul line.”
Asked if the Devils might come up against Morris again in the Class D sectionals, he stated, “There will be a lot of good teams in there — there are Delhi, South Kortright, Stamford, Southern Cayuga and Lansing, so it will be hard to tell.”
