Residential, Business Holiday Lights Competition in Delhi

By Rosie Cunningham

DELHI - Light up the holiday season in Delhi. Delhi residents and businesses will have the opportunity to not only beautify their locations, but win a little money and earn some bragging rights in the process.

For the inaugural holiday lights contest for Delhi area businesses, owners have the opportunity to win $100 for a first place prize, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.

“In addition to our holiday lights contest for Delhi businesses, the Delhi Beautification Committee (DBC) is sponsoring a residential holidays lights contest,” according to Peg Baldwin, of the DBC.

Participants of the residential competition must decorate their homes by Dec. 17, while businesses have until Dec. 18 for a chance to win cash prizes and the honor of “Best Holiday Lights 2017.”

The contest is open to all residents of the Delaware Academy School District and judging will take place on Dec. 18, 19 and 20. There will be a $100 prize for first, $50 for second and $25 for third place.

There will also be special recognition for the “Most Festive Street in the Village of Delhi.”

Baldwin encourages the public to participate and nominate neighbors.

“The event is sponsored by the DBC,” said Baldwin. “Dr. Candace Vancko provides the monetary support and this is the second year.”

The matching grant of up to $500 was created to help strengthen the connection between the Greater Delhi Area Chamber of Commerce business community and the population of SUNY Delhi according to a release.

“The event warms the community and exudes the holiday spirit. It was a great success last year and it originated to strengthen unity in the community and to have a little fun while doing it,” said Baldwin. “It makes Delhi look wonderful and the lights truly make you feel that it is time for the Christmas.”

The winners of the 2016 residential contest were:

1st Place: Kim Eighmey, 2nd Place: Melvin Elderkin and 3rd Place: Jennifer Kollig.

Honorable Mention nods went to Glenn Nealis and Kacie and Jeff Thomas of DeLancey.

The Most Festive Street Award: Crestwood Drive.
