During the awards portion of the dinner, WCS Board of Education President Ronda Williams presented its 21st annual Distinguished Service Award to Robert Lang.

Known affectionately as “Firefighter Bob,” Lang, who has been involved with the Walton Fire Department for more than 50 years, has volunteered to teach kids within the district the importance of fire safety and trusting firefighters. He visits classrooms, organizes the annual poster contest at Townsend Elementary School and coordinates the arrival of fire department members and equipment at the school to show the kids fire trucks and gear.

Following that award presentation, students were honored for academic achievement in all departments, including science, English/language, social studies, business, agriculture/technology, health/home and career/physical education, art and music.

The scholarship award was presented to Olivia Harby for scoring 100 percent on the Algebra I Common Core Regents.
