More Scoring in Semifinal

Benjamin Patton/The Reporter In the semifinal game, which started almost five hours earlier, the ’Jacks defeated Section II champion Fort Ann, 6-1. The Cardinals went into the game ranked second among Class D teams, to the Lumberjacks first ranking

Mikayla Martin doubled to start the game and went to third on Alea Tiffany’s sacrifice bunt. One out later, Kyra Martin walked, but Smith grounded out. In the bottom of the inning, Stiles struck out the first two batters, but walked the next two before whiffing the next hitter.

In the top of the second with one out, Lauren Gifford walked, and with two out, she scored on a double by Ballard. Mikayla Martin then singled to plate Ballard. In the bottom half with two gone, Stiles walked two more batters, and then Sarah Paige hit the ball to center field, where Tiffany caught it.

Benjamin Patton/The Reporter Deposit pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by Bryn Martin and Kyra Martin, but the rally ended there. In the bottom half, Stiles walked the first batter, Kayla Bailey, after which she got the first out on a pop-up, and struck out the next two.

In the fourth frame Bailey, the Cardinals’ pitcher, struck out Ballard and got Mikayla Martin out on an infield pop-up, and after walking Tiffany, she got Bryn Martin out on a groundout. In the bottom half, Tess Camp singled, and was forced out by Amanda Godfrey, and Stiles struck out the next two hitters.

Benjamin Patton/The Reporter Aubrin Smith singled with one out in the top of the fifth, but the next two Lumberjacks grounded out. In the bottom half, Fort Ann recorded its only run. Paige doubled and Bailey singled her home. An errant throw allowed Bailey to reach second, but Deposit catcher Bryn Martin threw her out as she tried to go to third, and Stiles fanned the next two hitters.

The ’Jacks made sure of the win in the sixth stanza, scoring three times. Pinch hitter Alaina Smith led off with a single and the next two batters were retired, but Tiffany singled her home. Both Bryn and Kyra Martin then walked, and an Aubrin Smith single plated Tiffany and Bryn Martin. In the bottom half, Camp had a one-out single, but got to closer, as an infield pop-up and a strikeout ended the inning.

The first batter of the bottom half was retired on a foul pop-up, and Stiles fanned the next two to end the game, and finished with 12 “K’s.”

Deposit Head Coach Dan Briggs praised his team for its performance in the two games and for the whole season. “We wanted to win every game and get back up here for the finals again. Everyone worked hard. We did what we have been doing, getting a lot of hits with two out, with two strikes, and from the bottom of the lineup.”

In the semifinal game, Stiles walked six batters, which surprised everyone. Of that, he noted, “She said that the ball was not going where she wanted it to go in the first two innings. She corrected that in the third inning and she was fine after that. Makenzie is very disciplined, and she works on her game almost all year round.”

The plane is a part of the New York National Guard’s 109th Airlift Wing
