Benjamin Patton/The Reporter SOUTH GLENS FALLS — The Deposit Lumberjacks accomplished something on Saturday that only one other softball team has ever accomplished in Class D since the state tournament began in 1985. With a 1-0 win over Section X champion Heuvelton, Coach Dan Briggs’ team won its third consecutive championship at the Moreau Recreational Park.

The first “three-peat” team was Section IX Chapel Field in 2003, 2004 and 2005. In 1990, Deposit won its first Class D state title, defeating Livingston Manor, 6-1. Afton has won seven state Class D titles, and Livingston Manor had successive titles in 2010 and 2011.

This year’s championship game was a pitchers’ dual between Deposit sophomore Makenzie Stiles and Heuvelton senior Paige McCormick. Stiles struck out 16, allowed two hits, walked none and had one error behind her. McCormick struck out six, gave up three hits, walked three, and had two errors behind her.

McCormick retired the side on an infield pop-up, a strikeout and an outfield fly.

Stiles struck out the side in the second, and McCormick also fanned three, interspersed by a walk and an error.

The first hit of the game was a two-out double by Heuvelton’s Katie Palmer, in the third inning, but Stiles fanned the next batter. Deposit got the game’s only run when Erin Ballard led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a double by Mikayla Martin. McCormick then got the next batters out on balls hit in the air.
