T.W. Coddington/The Reporter ANDES — At a business mixer on June 7 at Wayside Cider in Andes, Shokan resident Robert Selkowitz spoke of his plans for a Catskill Conquest Pilot Rally, to commemorate a 1903 automobile endurance run. It will begin in Stony Hill, as did the first run, but instead of finishing at Pine Hill, this year’s event will go all the way to Unadilla, along what now are State Routes 28 and 357.

“They are really pleased about it in Unadilla and Franklin,” he commented. The road crests four hills with more than 2,000 feet in elevation along the way, so the vintage cars need good brakes and good power to run in the “Conquest.”

There will be seven host/ checkpoints, where there are festivals and attractions, he indicated. Selkowitz encourages drivers to run in one direction or do a round trip. “If you love your car, come and drive it on this route. All vintages are welcome,” he stated, adding, “The Pilot Rally will open the route for an annual event. Come be a pioneer.”

IT REALLY HAPPENED — Robert Selkowitz of Shokan brought information on a special program he is planning for Sept. 23 and 24, the 90-mile Catskill Mountain Conquest Pilot Rally, which will run from just outside of Kingston to Unadilla, to the mixer on Wednesday. “They did it in 1903, and we will do it in 2017, but on a shorter route,” he stated.
