Delaware County Sheriff’s Employee Arrested, Suspended

By Lillian Browne

DELHI - Longtime Delaware County Corrections Officer Nathan P. Weaver, 39, of Andes, has been suspended without pay following his arrest for driving while intoxicated early Wednesday morning.

According to a press release issued by Undersheriff Craig DuMond, Weaver was traveling south on county Route 1 in Andes, when he fell asleep at the wheel, crossed into the northbound lane and subsequently struck a utility pole and overturned his vehicle.

Weaver was arrested at the scene by deputies from his own department and charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and failure to keep right.

Weaver has been employed by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department since October 1999, according to Delaware County personnel records.

Weaver sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash, but was not transported to the hospital, according to DuMond. Weaver was not on-duty at the time of the accident.

The Andes Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Weaver is suspended without pay pending the results of a disciplinary hearing, DuMond said.

“Sheriff Mills and I take these matters very seriously and do not condone or tolerate this conduct whatsoever,” DuMond said in the press release.

It is not uncommon for a law enforcement department to investigate alleged crimes of their own members. The investigation has been concluded and the case was closed following Weaver’s arrest, DuMond said.

Weaver is scheduled to answer the charges in Andes Town Court at a later date.
