Bulk Heroin Seized in Deposit

Two Arrested and Charged

Sherwood contributed photo DEPOSIT - Two town of Deposit residents were arrested by Delaware County Sheriff ’s Investigators early Friday morning on drug and weapon possession charges, following the execution of a search warrant in the hamlet of Hale Eddy by member of the Special Response Team. The execution of the high-risk search warrant and the subsequent arrests are part of an ongoing heroin distribution investigation being conducted by the Delaware County Sheriff ’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.

A search of the residence resulted in the seizure of approximately eight grams of bulk heroin, scales, packaging materials, a shotgun, prescription narcotics, marijuana, a kung-fu throwing star and several hundred dollars in cash. A Public Assistance Benefit card issued to one of the occupants was also located within the residence during the search.

Following the search, Sheriff ’s Investigators charged Scott M. Hanrahan, 30, Deposit, and Shalayne L. Sherwood, 38, Deposit, with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of unlawful possession of marijuana.

contributed photo Scott M. Hanrahan contributed photo During an interview on Friday, Hanrahan admitted to sheriff ’s investigators that he had bought and resold between $10,000 and $20,000 worth of heroin per week, periodically over the course of the past two years.

Two minor children were in the residence when the search warrant was executed and were turned over to a relative and a Child Protective Services Hotline report was initiated.

Hanrahan and Sherwood were arraigned in Hancock Village Court before Justice Buckley and were each remanded to the Delaware County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are expected in the near future.

An investigation was initiated and over the course of a couple months, a number of controlled buys were conducted and a search warrant was secured through Delaware County Criminal Court.

Commenting on the investigation, DuMond remarked, “Sheriff Mills and I are extremely proud of the tireless efforts of our investigators and deputies and their relationships with the public and other law enforcement agencies. For a lengthy period of time these defendants have been responsible for a significant amount of drug trafficking in the Deposit - Hancock area and surrounding communities.

We are happy to report, that as a result of the community’s involvement and our team’s collaboration with other area law enforcement agencies, the community is a better and safer place today.”

DuMond indicated that the bust will have a major impact on the heroin trade in the Deposit and Hancock areas. “The two individuals are known for prolific narcotics sales in that end of the county, in both Hancock and Deposit,” he said. “We received numerous expressions of thanks and appreciations from communities down there for taking these people out of these communities.”
